THE HORSEMEN’S PARK IN VEGAS HOSTS WSBBA FINALS

Rex L. Adams

On September 17, the bulls of the Western States Bucking Bull Association (WSBBA) stormed into Las Vegas’ Horseman’s Park for the Year-end Finals, an event that showcased the tremendous breeding programs WSBBA members have put together. The one day event featured fifty-five 2 year-old, 3 year-old, and 4 year-old bovine athletes competing for over $30,000 in prize money. Not only were they competing for the big money that went along with a finals title, they were also competing for the Year-end Championship.

The largest class of the day belonged to the 2 year-old Futurity bulls. 21 competitors bucked, and in the end it was Darrell Diefenbach’s #906 Chicken Lips that took home the $3,104.00 check and the finals championship. His 86.25 was a point and a quarter better than Ted Coleman’s #911 Joe, whose second place finish garnered $2,046.00. #09 Jiggit continued his consistent ways with a strong showing of 83.75 points, sending his owner—Allen Teller of the Salmon, Idaho area—home with $1,674.00 to add to his 2011 haul. Three bulls split 4/5/6—Diefenbach’s #939 Leather Head, Lyle Johnson’s #980 Raton, and Mann Creek’s #921 Twisted Lizard. Twisted Lizard’s placing was enough to secure the year-end title, holding off Teller’s Jiggit by just a few points.

In the Derby bull class a familiar name from last year pulled out the finals victory. #H08 Spaz Hou, owned by Curt Hadley of Osage Mother Buckers, waited until the final two events of the 2011 season to return to the form that made him the 2010 Year-end Futurity Champ. According to Hadley, it took the Houdini grandson some time to make the adjustment from dummy to rider. After the spurring the bull received from Mike Sparks at Malad, Hadley made the decision to give the bull a little time off. The break paid off as the 3 year-old placed second at Richfield and won first in Vegas. Hadley says the bull just got stronger and stronger as the year went along. Spaz Hou will be hitting some other events in other associations as well as competing in the WSBBA’s Classic division next year.

In order to take home the $3,188.00 first place check, Spaz Hou had to beat out 16 other rank bulls. Jeff and Ida Widener’s #318 Buster Butt Hou had a strong finish to the season with an 84, second place, and $2,240.00. In third with an 83.5 was Mann Creek’s #148 Lord Baltimore. John and Susan Wright’s #850 Hot Spot and the Mclean Bros. #2 Dos Burritos split fourth and fifth. Winning the Year-end Championship was Todd Erickson’s #87 Magic Man, who finished out of the money at the finals but still had a solid performance by scoring 80.5 points.

The 4 year-old Classic bulls also had a familiar name atop the leader board, only his time it was the breeder, not the bull that was familiar. Jerome, Idaho’s Jeff Rupert of the Rafter J Cattle Co. entered the top bull in the Classic division for the second year in a row. Last year it was Toy Soldier. This year it was #6 Bullet Proof that earned Rupert the finals title and the $3,845.00 paycheck. The strong finish catapulted Bullet Proof into second place for the Year-end standings—Jared Rydalch’s #8 Slim Chance was the Year-end Champion—which is pretty remarkable considering Bullet Proof started the year on injured reserve. When asked about Bullet Proof, Rupert says, “He’s a big brown bull that likes to buck. That’s about it.” The big brown bull gathered up two first place checks to finish up the 2011 season, and will now be testing his wares against the big dogs as Tim Robert’s of Mann Creek purchased the bull and will be packing him to PBR and other events.

As was typical of the 2011 season, the Classic division proved to be the most competitive, as only 5.5 points separated the top ten bulls. In the end, it was Scott Devol’s #77 Bringing it Harder that finished second behind Rupert’s Bullet Proof. Bringing it Harder brought it hard enough for an 84.75—Bullet Proof scored 87.5 points—and $2,787.00. #73 Bringing on the Fire, owned by Alex Hauser and Lloyd Pieygh, turned in an 84.50 point effort, placing third and earning $2,230.00. Bill Spaletta’s #701 Good Times and Lenny and Sara Holden’s #718 Screamin’ Eagle split fourth and fifth with an 84.

The finals marked the completion of the 2011 WSBBA season, which wouldn’t have been possible without the enormous efforts of the members, sponsors, and volunteers that take on the daunting task of raising bucking bulls and putting on events throughout the west.
